Religions: Kreen religion is centered in the chaio. What
is worshipped, in as many ways as there are chaios, is Ma'alin
-- the Ultimate Union, in which all creatures take part and which
has a will and a purpose of its own. There is little organized
religion and few "cults" -- such matters are considered
private within each chaio.

Overview:
(Dates in Kreen years unless otherwise noted)
Prehistory: Following the fall of the Avethellan
Empire, then planet Kree was seeded
with at least seven hundred identifiable species of predators
-- including several that were very intelligent and overwhelmingly
hostile. Soon all the major predators were wiped out -- but only
at the cost of great disruption of Kree's
ecosystem.
Over the next few million years the Kreen race shrunk, went underground, and sharpened their senses to a fantastic degree.
1: Kil Valley culture, under the Miethara, begins expansion.
200: All of Kil Valley brought to peace. Major predators eliminated. Early use of bronze. Cultural diffusion to other parts of Kree.
c. 500-1000: A series of destructive wars spurs technological development, and ultimately leaves the Miethara in control of their continent. Other continental areas (Nikannil, Boran, Baif, Renifes, Pukifath) form national states and kingdoms that resist contact.
c. 1000: Period of cultural stagnation begins.
c. 1500: Stagnation ends with the discovery of iron mines and formation of an Iron-Age culture in Legan. A religio-philosophical movement is seized by the Miethara and allows them to conquer Baif. Increased trade leads to a plateau of high culture, and then --
1780: Attacks from the Empire of the Faeltiphenla (based in Renifres) separates Baif and the Miethara. Piracy keeps trade down. Other cultures have entered the Iron Age, and the Empire of the Miethara enters a period of inconclusive, evenly-matched wars.
c. 2100: The Miethara develop the ironclad warship. Napalm-like substances, which until now have been the ultimate weapon, are rendered obsolete . . . and the seas once again belong to the Miethara.
2300: Baif recaptured. The Miethara begins encroachment on Nikannil. An alliance is made between Nikannil and the Empire of the Faeltiphenla. Faeltiphenla develops ironclads and a new plateau is reached.
c. 2400: All other independent states and kingdoms are now allied (via personnel transfer = intermarriage) with either the Miethara or the Faeltiphenla. Minor seesawing occurs but no significant gains are made by either side.
c. 3000: Gunpowder discovered, first by the Faeltiphenla and then in short order by the Miethara. Wars become even more destructive and there is a general state of economic depression and even localized anarchy, as some chaios attempt to separate themselves from the large riakos.
3287: An exchange of personnel occurs between students and faculty of the major universities in the Miethara and Faeltiphenla Empires, paving the way for increased communication bbetween the two riakos. In the midst of wars, such exchanges become more commonplace, and finally --
3403: The Miethara and Faeltiphenla merge in Kil Valley and their worldwide state becomes known as the Empire of the Faeltiphenla and Miethara. Cultural stagnation follows and tradition becomes of utmost importance as society settles into a rigid caste structure that continues virtually unchanged until --
c. 4700: A subset of the Miethara begins social agitation and simultaneously catapults Kree into an Industrial Revolution.
c. 4850: The old government is overthrown and the new Empire of the Miethara emerges from the ruin. Population increases drastically.
c. 4900: Space travel beings, followed in jig time by space industrialization in time to prevent economic crisis caused by shortages of natural resources. First evidence of Kreen descent from Avethell is discovered.
4932: An intact Avethellan starboat is discovered on Kree's major moon. Interstellar travel and colonization begin, and the search for Avethell is on.
5107: Avethell is found. The Golden Throne is brought to Kree by the Galactic Riders.
5342: Barentikater IV colonized.
c. 5700: Empire of the Miethara reaches its practical physical limits.
c. 6000: The first in a series of interstellar wars rocks the Empire of the Miethara. It ends with --
c. 6200: The establishment of a new strong Miethara government. Stagnation and social stratification, combatted by freedom fighters on many worlds (aided by the Galactic Riders).
c. 7500: Brutal wars smash the peace of the Empire. Several worlds are destroyed. The Miethara is split into at least three major subsets, each claiming legitimacy. Minor territorial adjustments occur, but it is not until --
c. 12,000: Peace comes to the Empire in a series of conferences arranged by the Galactic Riders at the request of Kil Valley Kreen. Cultural exchange and homogenization continues, and by --
c. 12,400: The Empire of the Miethara is at peace and unity once again.
c. 18,000: Discovery of previously-unknown Avethellan settlements reveals procedures for using K3 defense screens. The entire cycle of wars begins anew, and the Empire dissolves into no fewer than 65 separate governments. Forced evolution and genetic drift differentiate the basic Kreen species into four major varieties, and interbreeding becomes taboo.
c. 20,000: 250 governments and 12 subspecies.
c. 22,000: 1,500 governments and over 50 mutually incompatible subspecies.
22,304: A quintet is dispatched from the Miethara of Kil Valley to Avethell to ask for help. In a precedent-breaking move, a descendant of Aemallana is sent into Kreen space. She seats the quintet on the Golden Throne, and Kree begins to peacefully reconquer the Empire.
26,823: The star Barentikater shows signs of developing into a nova. The science of the Miethara is stretched to the limit to control the star. Mass migration of the system's population is considered, until Miethara scientists announce that stability has been assured.
c. 27,000: Outlying galactic exploration parties make contach with the Sebhra ("Enemies,") apparently a Hchevidiire-type lifeform at least partially under the domination of the Gathered Worlds. Sebhra ships track exploration parties, and the Empire of the Miethara is invaded. A period of war with the Sebhra commences, and does not end until --
c. 27,700: A vast Kreen starfleet enters Sebhra space and the Sebhra are beaten. The Kreen fleet withdraws with prisoners, depopulating Sebhra space. Sebhra prisoners become a slave caste in Miethara space. Galactic Riders withdraw from the Empire of the Miethara.
28,218: A Barentikater-IV-born sextet travels to Kree with a message that Barentikater IV is withdrawing from the Empire of the Miethara in protest of treatment of the Sebhra. Galactic Riders recontact Barentikater IV. Passive rebellion begins on a few other worlds.
28,520: The Deathsong of Filtan.
28,521: Barentikater IV's sun goes nova, totally destroying the planet. Rebellion breaks out throughout the Empire, as many worlds conclude that the Miethara deliberately caused the nova. They are right.
c. 30,000: After a millennium and a half of destructive wars, the Miethara on Kree sets all Sebhra free and makes them cultural partners in the Empire. Old-guard worlds react badly, and the wars escalate.
c. 31,000: Conditions far worse than 22,000 now obtain throughout the Empire of the Miethara.
c. 31,400: A Miethara delegation returns the Golden Throne to Avethell for safekeeping.
31,432: Kree falls to invading forces.
c. 32,000: Effective end of the Empire of the Miethara.
c. 35,000: Kreen racial maturity begins.
c. 39,000: Kree accepts protection by the Galactic Riders. The Council of the Free Peoples of the Scattered Worlds congratulates Kree on reaching true Civilization. In lieu of their previous homeworld, a Mietharan planet is set up by the Galactic Riders as the Sebhra homeworld. Slowly but surely, other states in Miethara space are either destroyed, destroy themselves, or reach maturity.
c. 40,000: Except for scattered primitive settlements, all surviving Kreen are safe on Kree or serving with the Galactic Riders or the Free Peoples.
