According to the
Librarian's Guide to Anime and Manga at http://www.koyagi.com/Libguide.html:

Anime is animation that is made in Japan. Anime is an art form with a distinctive style and includes all genres. In Japan, anime is released in three ways: TV shows, movies, and direct-to-video. In the US, some TV networks show anime programs, and many companies distribute re-dubbed and subtitled anime on both video and DVD.

Manga, roughly translated as "comic books", are graphic novels. In Japan, manga are published as serialized stories in magazines which are often later collected into book form. Many companies outside of Japan issue translated manga in multi-volume sets. Manga are often black-and-white, and sometimes read right-to-left and back-to-front in the Japanese fashion.
