GOH: Poul Anderson
Balticon 13 was Don's tenth con; however, there is nothing
on record to indicate that he realized that fact at the time.
Since the con itself started on Friday the 13th, there was
a big Friday evening party hosted by Gore DeVol: costumes, cash
bar, prizes, and the Flying Karamazov Brothers. The program guide
also says "The musical group 'Clam Chowder'
will be appearing from 9:00 - 10:00 PM in the esculator (sic)
lobby, and possibly at other times not scheduled."
With Mike Jittlov as a guest, this may have been Don's first
exposure to his work.
Don seems to remember Mary Mand and him hanging out in the
hotel lobby on Easter morning, making fun of the mundanes
in their Easter best..."Oh, look, Martha, isn't that a lovely
costume she has on?"
The Hunt Valley Inn had added a swimming pool since Balticon
12, and Don spent many happy hours immersed in the water. He also
visited the Amateur Film Festival, where he saw "Intestines
from Space," a wacky film about some strange invaders.
By now Balticon was reognized as a major regional
con, a far cry from Don's first Balticon
in the Reisterstown Hilton. The list of pros fills one complete
page of the program book,
and the program book itself
is chock-full of publishers' advertisements...a sure sign that
the con was beginning to be taken seriously.
