Security was increased at EveCon 5, most notably with the introduction of photo-ID badges. Cons, it seemed, were beginning to attract a lot of people who had little interest in SF or in fandom, but who were in search of a good party.
This is a problem that all cons seem to face sooner or later -- both Boskone and Balticon had their troubles. The knee-jerk response of "increased security" seldom seems to solve the problem.
